App Review: Action Launcher 3-Philippe Monnier

I don’t usually purchase apps, but when I do, they go by the name of Action Launcher

That’s right. I’m not a big app buyer. I’m trying to be, though. Most are less expensive than a cup of coffee, and the satisfaction they give is bigger. Plus, if I don’t like my cup of Starbucks, I can’t return it. With apps, you can get a refund. However, this is not the topic of discussion. Chris Lacy’s app is.

I was a huge fan of Action Launcher since the first version, through its update to becoming Action Launcher 2. Needless to say, the release of Action Launcher 3 made me very excited, and I was ready to pay for Lacy’s newest work. Do I regret it? Absolutely not.

Action Launchers always come with two things: a Quickdrawer, and a Quickpage. The Quickdrawer is a replacement for the App Drawer. Swiping left will bring it up, and swiping right brings up the Quickpage, an extra page where widgets can be added. Under the settings, we find a new implementation to the Action Launcher Trilogy: Quicktheme. Quicktheme Fetches the colors from your wallpaper, and changes the colors in order to match. The results are beautiful, especially when it is set along with Muzei.

Another feature which is married to Action Launcher, are Covers and Shutters. Covers, as the name implies, are for covering. When tapping on a cover, it opens the app it portrays. However, when swiped, it opens a folder. Shutters work in a similar way, when swiping on a Shutter, the app’s widget will pop up.
The search bar matches the wallpaper

Swiping up on the phone brings up the folder, which also matches the wallpaper

The launcher comes with basic, yet enough customization options, including grid size, icon packs and sizes, and scrollable wallpapers. It also supports gestures, and backing up the current layout.

I love this launcher. It doesn't overwhelm you with customization options (if that’s not your thing). It is not like Nova or Apex, with which you can do anything you please. Action gives you enough options, while including the charming Covers, Shutters, and Quicktheme. The result is very pleasing to the eye. I used to change launchers as often as I changed underpants, until I found this Launcher. I have been using Action Launcher (this, and previous versions) for over a year, with extremely satisfactory results. Highly recommend it.

Pros:

- Covers, Shutters

- Quickthem

-Very smooth

- No learning curve
Quickpage

- Option to choose between app drawer, and Quickdrawer

Cons:

- Not close to Nova on customization options (might be an issue, depending on the user)
